TAYYIB

A hard halal gate for everything money touches.

Stocks, funds, savings, pensions and employers. One verdict to the AAOIFI standard, with the ratios, two independent sources that must agree, the purification owed and the date to check again. An add-on for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor.

The gate, in the same order every time

Most mistakes in halal investing are not hard cases. They are a bond fund inside a tax wrapper nobody screened, a savings account chosen for its rate, a clean company whose job is in its defence unit, or a single screener's green tick taken on trust. Tayyib runs the same procedure every time and writes the same document.

  1. Core business firstBanking, insurance, gambling, alcohol, defence and whatever serves them. A fail here is a FAIL whatever the ratios. For a job, the unit and the work, not just the group.
Source: the annual report's segment note, the unit's page, the job description.
  2. The three ratiosNon-compliant income below 5% of revenue; debt below 33% of market capitalisation; cash and interest-bearing securities below 33%.
Source: the latest filing and exchange data, with the basis stated.
  3. Two sources must agreeScreener pages are fetched and dated. A split is BORDERLINE at best. A page that cannot be read is "unverified" and does not count.
Source: the two primary screeners and a tiebreaker.
  4. One verdict in a fixed layoutCLEAN, BORDERLINE or FAIL, with the reasoning, the purification arithmetic and a re-screen date. A checker fails any verdict that drifts from the layout.
Eight numbered sections, a mark on every fact, footnoted sources at the end.
✅ CLEAN

Passes core business and the three ratios, and two independent sources agree on pages read today.

🟡 BORDERLINE

Means borderline. A split or unverified source, a ratio near its limit, a fund with no purification policy. The verdict names what resolves it.

❌ FAIL

A core-business fail or a ratio over its limit. Never softened for yield, pay or convenience.

What it screens

Stocks

Core business, then the three ratios, then two screeners agreeing. The interest-income percentage is reported even when it passes.

Funds

CLEAN only for a fund screened to a named Shariah index or methodology with a Shariah board. Any fund holding bonds is a FAIL.

Cash and savings

Conventional interest is riba. Prize-draw savings are riba and gambling. CLEAN: Islamic-bank products on an expected-profit basis under a Shariah board.

Wrappers: ISAs and pensions

The wrapper is neutral; every holding inside it is screened. A default pension fund is usually conventional and a FAIL until changed.

Employers and clients

Core-business test on the company, then on the unit and the work itself. A clean company's defence or lending unit is a FAIL for a role in it.

What a full verdict looks like

Four sample verdicts, one per product type and one per outcome, in Arabic and English, each to the fixed layout the skill enforces. The companies are samples and the figures are illustrative.

Quillmark Industries: Tayyib verdictScreened on 10 February 2026

1. The verdict in one paragraph. Quillmark makes paper and moulded-fibre packaging for food and consumer goods, with no excluded line of business ✅1. Interest income is 0.6% of revenue, debt 18% of market capitalisation and cash 9%, all inside the thresholds ✅2, 3. Both primary screeners mark it compliant on pages read today, and the tiebreaker agrees ✅4, 5, 6. The verdict changes if debt rises above a third of market capitalisation, which a 45% fall in the share price alone would cause 🟡, because the debt ratio is the nearest to its threshold.

Sabrwell Global Equity Index Fund: Tayyib verdictScreened on 10 February 2026

1. The verdict in one paragraph. The fund tracks a named Shariah-screened global equity index with a published methodology and an index-provider Shariah board ✅1, 2. Its holdings pass on the index's screen, and the fund holds no bonds or money-market instruments for yield ✅3. It is BORDERLINE rather than CLEAN for two reasons: the two primary screeners split, one compliant and one "not screened", and the fund publishes no purification policy or figure 🟡, because the standard requires purification and a fund that does not help with it has not finished its job. A published purification ratio would make it CLEAN.

Fennbridge Bank Easy Saver: Tayyib verdictScreened on 10 February 2026

1. The verdict in one paragraph. The account pays interest at 4.1% AER on a conventional banking balance sheet, which is riba, so it fails the core-business test and no ratio can rescue it ✅1, 2. The verdict is the same for every conventional interest-bearing account regardless of rate, and it does not depend on the screeners, who agree ✅3, 4. The alternative is an expected-profit-rate account at an Islamic bank under a Shariah board, which the verdict names in section 5.

Orrinbridge Analytics, Defence Programmes role: Tayyib verdictScreened on 10 February 2026

1. The verdict in one paragraph. Orrinbridge is a data-analytics consultancy whose group revenue is 71% commercial and public-sector work and 29% defence, so the group passes the core-business test only if defence is read as incidental, which at 29% it is not 🟡. The role sits in the Defence Programmes unit and the job description names weapons-systems analytics as the work ✅1, 2. A role in an excluded unit fails regardless of the group, so the verdict is FAIL ✅3. A role in the commercial analytics unit would be screened separately and might pass.

Then ask the way you would ask a colleague.

  • Is Acme halal?
  • Screen this fund before I put it in my ISA.
  • Can I take this role? The company is clean but the job is in the lending unit.
  • Purification owed on 500 shares held all year.

Five things it will not do
